Swine Flu - Symptoms and Protective Measures
In children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
* Fast breathing or difficulty in breathing
* Bluish or gray skin colour
* Not drinking enough fluids
* Severe or persistent vomiting
* Not waking up or not interacting
* Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
* Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Spread of H1N1 (swine) flu can occur in two ways:
H1N1 virus appears to be transmitted the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
Protective Measures:
* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
* Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
* If you get sick with influenza, you should stay at home and not go for work or school and limit contact with others to prevent them from getting infecting by you.
* Reduce the time spent in the crowded settings.
* Improve airflow in the living space by opening the windows and proper ventilation.
* Practice good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.

No Kidding - Child Psychiatry Workshop Hosted by Calibre Educational Foundation
The three day workshop on child psychiatry held at Savera Hotel under the auspices of Calibre Educational Foundation came to a close on the 19th of July. A seminar of this kind has been attempted ,very successfully, for the first time in the South with the sole purpose of destroying the myth of the concept of “mental imbalance’ that surrounds the words ‘psychiatry” and psychology”.
The event was well attended on all the three days with a very good representation from quite a few schools of Chennai including the Corporation schools of Kodambakkam, Saidapet and Gopalpuram. The Headmaster of the Corporation school (Boys) of Kodambakkam,Mr. Bharatidasan. expressed his gratitude to the Correspondent of Calibre Academy, Mrs. Madhuvanthi Arun for having involved the teachers, children and parents of the Corporation Schools and giving them an exposure which under normal circumstances would be beyond their reach. The children and the teachers themselves pointed out that it had been a very great learning experience for them and they had enjoyed every minute of it.
Several parents were appreciative of the one to one session we had arranged for them with Dr Alok Bajpai, the child psychiatrist who had conducted the three day workshop for us. The panel discussions with eminent personalities from different walks of life, discussing the various aspects that affected child growth and development, were a super hit with all those who attended .
At the valedictory function,Mrs. Y.G.parthasarathy,the Dean and Director of the Padma Seshadri group of Schools summed it all up by saying that the time spent at the workshop on all these three days had been well spent and that all the delegates had something worthwhile to take back with them.
